Step one

How to measure your bra size at home

You need a soft tape measure and about two minutes. Take both measurements in inches, standing upright, ideally in front of a mirror so you can check the tape stays level across your back.

Measurement one

Under bust

Wear an unpadded bra or none at all. Bring the tape around your ribcage directly under your breasts and pull it snug — firm enough to stay level all the way around, not tight enough to dig in. Keep the tape parallel to the floor and breathe out before you read the number.

Measurement two

Over bust

Bring the tape around the fullest part of your bust. This one stays loose — it should rest against the lace without compressing anything, because flattening the tissue here is the most common reason a woman ends up in a cup that is too small.

Write both numbers down. The first gives you your band size, the second gives you your cup. If you have been wearing the same size for years without measuring, expect a surprise — most women who come to us for hard-to-find sizes have been in the wrong band for a decade.

Step two

Bra band size chart

Round your under-bust measurement to the nearest whole inch and add two. If that lands on an odd number, go up to the next even number — band sizes are always even. A 40 inch ribcage gives you a 42 band.

Step three

Bra cup size chart

Subtract your under-bust measurement from your over-bust measurement. The difference in inches is your cup letter — one inch is an A, two inches a B, and straight on through the alphabet. A ten inch difference is a J cup.

Our cup letters run straight through the alphabet without doubling up, which is how European bra sizing works. There is no separate DD or DDD step — a five inch difference is an E, which we also label DD, and a six inch difference is an F, which we also label DDD.

The top of the range

What is the maximum bra size?

There is no single answer, because bra sizing has two dimensions and manufacturers stop at different points in each. What matters in practice is this: our sizes run far beyond a DDD, which is where most US retailers stop and where a great many women are told, wrongly, that their size does not exist.

A DDD is only an F on our chart. Above it the letters simply keep going — G, H, I, J, K, L and onward — because European makers continue through the alphabet rather than stacking extra D's. If DDD has been the largest size ever offered to you, you have been shopping at the end of someone else's range, not at the limit of what is made.

Well past where most stores stop

Where a mainstream US retailer ends at DDD, our range carries on through the alphabet. The cup letters on the chart above are the same letters printed on the bras.

Availability varies by band

Not every cup is made in every band, and the pattern is not a neat grid — some bands carry larger cups than others. The calculator will give you your size; the collection pages show what is actually in stock in it.

Large cup, smaller band

A common combination and one most stores handle badly. A 34J or 36K is an entirely ordinary size for a slim ribcage and a full bust, and it is exactly the sort of size we exist to carry.

If you cannot find your size listed

Email both measurements to info@fitaumax.com. We can often source sizes that are not on the site, and we would rather tell you honestly what is possible than sell you something close enough to be uncomfortable.

If your measurements put you at the upper end, start with our large cup size bras, or go straight to J cup, K cup and L cup bras. If nothing there fits, our custom order service exists for exactly that reason.

Step four

Panty size chart: Bra and panty sets

Measure your waist at its narrowest point and your hips at the fullest. Our panties are cut to the same European pattern as the bras, so a matching bra and panty set will sit correctly together.

Supportive bras by cup size

Every collection below is built around one cup size, so you are only looking at bras made to fit you. We carry cup sizes B through M in band sizes 30 to 50, including the hard-to-find larger cups most US retailers stop short of.

Or shop by the house that made them: Gorsenia and WiesMANN from Poland, and Sans Complexe from France.

Four things that change your size

Gorsenia bands run small

If you are ordering Gorsenia, take one band size up from what the chart gives you and keep the same cup letter. A 36G becomes a 38G. WiesMANN and Sans Complexe run true to the chart.

If you have always worn DD or DDD

Those two sizes appear on our size menu as DD / E and DDD / F. Choose either label — they are the same bra. Above F the letters simply continue: G, H, I, J, K, L, M.

Landing on a half inch

Round to the nearest whole inch before you do the arithmetic. If you are sitting exactly on a half, round up — a little more cup is far more comfortable than a little less across a long day.

Narrow underwires fit differently

Our wires are narrower than most US bras and trace the base of the breast rather than spreading across tissue. Paired with side boning and a flat center gore, a band that feels firm on the first try is usually correct.

Common questions

Bra sizing questions, answered

How do I measure my bra size at home?

Take two measurements with a soft tape. Measure snugly under your bust for your band, then loosely across the fullest part of your bust for your cup. Add two inches to the under-bust number and round up to the next even number for your band size. Subtract the under-bust number from the over-bust number, and the difference in inches gives you your cup letter.

What is a DDD bra size in European sizing?

A DDD is an F cup. European sizing runs A, B, C, D, E, F and onward without doubling letters, so what US retailers call DD is our E and what they call DDD is our F. Our size menu shows both labels together so there is no guesswork.

Do Polish and French bras fit differently from US bras?

Yes, and it is usually an improvement for a fuller bust. Our Polish and French bras use narrow underwire that sits flush against the ribcage, vertical side boning that stops the cups sliding outward, a flat center gore that lies against the sternum, and wide adjustable straps that spread the weight across the shoulder. The band does most of the supporting work, so it will feel firmer than a soft US band.

What should I do if I am between two bra sizes?

Order the larger cup with the smaller band. The cup volume stays roughly the same while the firmer band gives you the support, which is why sister sizing works. If your measurement sits exactly on a half inch, round up rather than down.

Why does my bra band ride up at the back?

Almost always because the band is too loose and the cup is too small. When a cup cannot hold the breast tissue, the weight pulls the front of the bra down and the back rides up to compensate. Re-measure, and expect to move down a band size and up a cup letter or two.

What cup sizes does Fit Au Max Lingerie carry?

We carry cup sizes B through M in band sizes 30 to 50, including DD, DDD, F, G, H, I, J, K, L and M — the hard-to-find larger cups most mainstream US retailers do not stock. Every bra is made in Poland or France by Gorsenia, WiesMANN or Sans Complexe.

What is the maximum bra size for women?

There is no universal maximum. Band and cup are measured separately, and every manufacturer stops at a different point in each. What is worth knowing is that sizes run a long way past the DDD where most US retailers stop, and that being told your size does not exist usually means you are in the wrong store rather than off the end of the scale.

What is the biggest cup size you can buy?

Far larger than most people are shown. European makers run straight through the alphabet instead of stacking extra D's, so the letters keep going well beyond the point US sizing gives up. Use the calculator above to find where your own measurements land.

Do they make bras bigger than a DDD?

Yes, and considerably bigger. A DDD is only an F on our chart, with G, H, I, J, K, L and beyond above it. If DDD has been the largest size ever offered to you, you have been shopping where someone else's range ran out.

How often should I measure my bra size again?

Once a year, and any time your weight shifts by ten pounds or more. Bra bands also relax with wear, so a band that felt firm when new and now sits loose on the tightest hook is telling you the bra is finished rather than that your size has changed.
