Yes, the I cup exists — and if you have been told otherwise, you were talking to a shop that simply does not stock it. It sits between H and J, it is a nine-inch difference between your band and your bust, and it is entirely ordinary once you are looking in the right place.

How big is an I cup in inches?

Cup letters describe a difference rather than a fixed amount. Measure your ribcage directly beneath the bust, then measure across the fullest part of the bust, and subtract the first from the second. Each inch of difference moves you one letter along, and nine inches lands you at I.

That is the whole calculation, but it comes with an important caveat: the letter on its own does not tell you how physically large the cup is. Nine inches of difference over a 32 band produces a noticeably smaller cup than nine inches over a 44 band, because the volume scales with the ribcage it sits on. Two women both wearing an I cup can look quite different, and neither is measuring wrong.

This is also why comparing yourself to a photo online rarely helps. Frame, breast root width and tissue density all shift the appearance independently of the label.

Why so many people think it does not exist

Mainstream retailers typically stop somewhere around a DDD, occasionally reaching G. Past that, the pattern has to be redrafted rather than scaled: the wire needs a different shape, the cup needs genuine depth rather than extra width, and the band needs reinforcement to carry the additional load. That costs more to produce and sells to fewer people, so most large chains simply do not order it.

The result is a size that is perfectly standard in European manufacturing and effectively invisible on an American high-street rack. Women wearing it spend years being told to try a bigger band or make do with a G, which solves nothing, because neither addresses the actual volume.

For the band, wrap the tape around your ribcage directly under the bust, keeping it level all the way round and snug without pulling tight. For the bust, measure across the fullest point with the tape level and relaxed, not compressing anything. Take both over a bra that fits reasonably well rather than a heavily padded one..

Re-measure roughly every six months. Weight, hormones, medication and age all move the figure, and a size that was correct two years ago may not be correct now — which is a common reason a once-comfortable bra starts to feel wrong for no obvious reason.
